Recently, Diagnostics, an international academic journal in the field of medical diagnostics, published a paper entitled “Prospective Comparison of Nine Different Handheld Ultrasound (HHUS) Devices by Ultrasound Experts with Regard to B-Scan Quality, Device Handling and Software in Abdominal Sonography”. A prospective comparison of nine different handheld ultrasound devices in abdominal ultrasound by ultrasound experts") is the first comprehensive study in the world to compare nine handheld ultrasound devices head-to-head. The CHISON Medical SonoEye handheld ultrasound received the best overall score in the study.

The study notes that ultrasound (US) has become increasingly important in clinical routine and pre-emergency diagnostics in recent years. Over the past two decades, improvements in device miniaturization and digitization have driven the development and widespread use of handheld ultrasound (HHUS) devices. Particularly in point-of-care (POCUS) diagnostics, HHUS devices not only play a key role in emergency medicine, outpatient diagnostics, and point-of-care use, but can also be used in isolation settings, intensive care, and ultrasound training scenarios.
Selecting the right HHUS device requires consideration of a variety of factors, the most important of which are the specific medical problem and application environment. In addition to parameters such as device weight, probe shape, battery life, start-up time, and heat generation, adequate ultrasound image quality is undoubtedly one of the primary criteria for evaluating different HHUS devices.
In this study, nine different HHUS devices were used in a prospective setting by 12 experienced examiners, each device being operated on the same subjects. The devices were subsequently evaluated for ultrasound image quality, maneuverability, and software usability using a detailed scientific questionnaire.

The order in which each HHUS device is displayed is based on the ratings it received. Black dots indicate mean values.
In the ultrasound image quality score, the SonoEye Palm Ultrasound (3.9, 95% CI 3.6 to 4.2) achieved the best score along with the other two palm ultrasound devices; in the software score, the SonoEye Palm Ultrasound (4.4, 95% CI 4.3 to 4.5) received the highest score and was significantly higher than the other devices; and in the overall score, the SonoEye Palm Ultrasound (4.1. 95% CI 3.9 to 4.2) received the best overall score with another device.

This study provides the first comprehensive direct comparison of nine different handheld ultrasound devices, and while most of the devices tested demonstrated sufficiently excellent performance, there were significant differences between them, particularly in image quality, which has a significant impact on clinical applications. The results of this study will help in the selection of appropriate handheld ultrasound devices according to specific clinical goals, while their inherent limitations can also be taken into account.
